GCSE 2008-2009

Examination Board:
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE)

Assessment Pattern: Observational Study/Interpretive Study – (8 hour practical)
50% of Exam mark with supporting work consisting of 4 A2 sheets of preparatory studies. Candidates will draw/paint a topic from a range of subjects that will include the human figure, natural and man-made objects and exterior/interior scenes for the observational exam. The interpretive study follows the same criteria and is aimed towards the students who prefer to experiment with ideas and concepts. The supporting studies for both papers must be based on first hand studies from primary sources as a starting point. Investigation research and evaluation are required to support the examination piece.

Coursework – One final piece plus a supporting portfolio of work that directly relates to the final image is compulsory. This will account for 50% of the student’s final exam mark.

Course Description: The GCSE syllabus requires that pupils’ work encompasses a range of related activities, areas and approached to their studies. Emphasis is placed on investigation, research and development of their work in response to the topics chosen. Students will use the many opportunities towards different approaches to the topics presented.

A varied programme of work is constructed, allowing pupils to respond to subjects and themes in a range of contexts. Students will carry out relevant exploration of materials and media, developing their work and omit, acquiring the technical skills to communicate their ideas visually.

Initial emphasis is placed on developing skills in analytical drawing and painting. Pupils will apply critical skills and historical knowledge to their work. Students will respond to a different topic each term.

For the 2011 – 2013 period the topics will be:

  1. Still Life
  2. Portraiture – subcultures

Students will use opportunities to focus on a range of skills necessary to complete their studies for each area. Students will choose in Year 11 which project will be sent to Cambridge as part of their coursework. With the use of the library and computers pupils will develop their ability to carry out relevant research.
